Our bees live a pretty wonderful life along the banks of the wild Black River in Kingstree, South Carolina. Surrounded by wetlands, woodlands, nearby farms, and fresh river water, they enjoy a rich variety of places to forage for nectar and pollen throughout the seasons.
We also keep hives in the South Carolina Lowcountry, including at Clemson’s Agricultural Station in West Ashley, where the bees get to explore some of the exciting varietals Clemson is working on. Others are tucked away in Hanahan, quietly thriving in a city known as a bird sanctuary.
Every hive is managed by an overly involved beekeeper—that’s me!—and cared for with a thoughtful, organic approach to beekeeping. The result is honey that reflects the places our bees call home and the care that goes into keeping them healthy.
From Carnival Rides to Bee Hives
My journey into beekeeping started in a pretty unexpected place: the Coastal Carolina Fair. I was there with my 15-year-old niece, and after riding far too many carnival rides for a woman in her fifties, I desperately needed a break before I lost my lunch. We wandered into the agricultural tent, where I came across a local beekeeping club and their observation hive. Thirty minutes later, someone suggested I might enjoy their upcoming Beekeeping 101 class—and they were absolutely right. That weekend course was one of the most fascinating classes I have ever taken.
Bees are extraordinary creatures. They have unique social structure, highly organized roles, remarkable communal behavior, and surprisingly democratic processes inside the hive—not to mention a fierce approach to queen politics. Yes, there are long, hot days of hard work in 90-degree weather, suited up and tending the hives with a smoker in hand. But the rewards make it all worthwhile. Healthy, happy hives give us honey, beeswax, and propolis—natural products we are proud to share.
